Cheam School
Project overview
The BB7 Team were instructed to carry out fire risk assessments and organisational fire risk strategy management for the entire school site. Our reporting highlighted any potential issues and our team were able to advise on the solution to these.
Project Scope
Cheam School is a mainstream, independently funded junior school for girls and boys in Newbury, Berkshire, England. In 1934 the school bought Beenham Court in Headley where the school has stayed since. This was originally a Georgian farmhouse but was largely re-built in 1882 and again in 1912.
Over the past 20 years, continued improvements have seen the building of Taylor Block (a teaching block) in
2001, a new Sports Hall in 2003 and the Duke of Edinburgh building, which houses the Pre-Prep and also the Art and Design and Technology departments in 2011 and a new kitchen servery in 2014. The school has over 350 pupils and has been home to many high-profile students, including the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and King Charles III.
The BB7 response
BB7 were instructed to carry out fire risk assessments and organise a fire risk strategy for the entire school site. Conducting a fire risk assessment for a school is crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors. Schools are densely populated environments with individuals of varying ages and mobility, making the effective management of fire risks essential. A thorough fire risk assessment helps identify potential fire hazards and implement preventive measures, ensuring compliance with legal fire safety regulations and standards. This proactive approach minimises the risk of fire and prepares the school for efficient emergency response, reducing potential harm and property damage. Moreover, regular assessments and updates to the fire risk strategy foster a culture of safety and preparedness within the school community, providing peace of mind to parents and stakeholders while promoting a secure learning environment.
Benefits of service
With BB7’s experience in buildings of historical interest we were able to advise on the most appropriate solutions that would not only increase levels of life safety and improved organisation fire strategy, but also ensure the welfare of the building itself.
