Project overview
BB7 were appointed by Harley Hadlow Services to provide fire safety advice to justify the means of escape and fire stopping provisions as a result of alterations to Fettes College.
Project scope
Fettes College is a private co-educational independent boarding and day school in Edinburgh, Scotland, with over two-thirds of its pupils in residence on campus. The school was originally a boarding school for boys only and became co-ed in 1983. In 1978 the College had a nine-hole golf course, an ice-skating rink used in winter for ice hockey and in summer as an outdoor swimming pool, a cross-country running track and a rifle shooting range within the forested 300-acre grounds.
The BB7 response
BB7 provided fire safety advice, justifying the means of escape. Due to the historic and Category A listed nature of the college it was difficult to apply modern measures to the alteration but BB7 were able to provide solutions to reassure the client by attending site and working with the contractor to achieve the functional requirements of the current guidance in the Scottish Technical Handbook.
Benefits of service
Altering buildings is difficult as it attracts the full current standards relevant to the works. This is not often achievable in historic and listed buildings as you are limited to what can be upgraded or changed. BB7 were, therefore, required to advise and support the client throughout the process to demonstrate that the alterations did not impact the occupants escaping and there was no increase risk.
