Project overview
BB7 joined the V&A team in 2019 to provide a fire risk assessment of the full building on a 3 year rolling contract. This included assessing the back of house, storage and staff areas, along with the galleries and exhibitions.
As the exhibitions within the museum were changed and update, BB7 also carried out FRAs of the individual areas to ensure the risk to life safety, as well as property protection, was not influencing by the proposed installations. This was particularly prudent for exhibitions, such as the ‘Plastic exhibition’, were the fire load was increasing.
Project Scope
Our scope was to carry out the annual fire risk assessment for the full museum building along with carrying out individual fire risk assessments when the galleries changed exhibition. As we had familiarity with the building, we also provided fire safety design support when the exhibitions were being constructed.
Expertly engineering safety for efficient and effective management when in use.
The BB7 response
Due to our familiarity with the building and relationship with the team at the V&A, BB7 also provided design advice when the exhibition were being planned, following the guidance and legislation in the Non-Domestic Technical Handbook to ensure travel distances and adequate escape provisions were being met.
BB7 still have involvement with the museum currently and have recently provided further scope to continue with the annual FRAs for the building.
Benefits of service
Carrying out yearly FRAs allowed BB7 to become familiar with the building and provide a service to the client that was reliable and satisfactory. It also allowed a constant connection whereby the client could ask questions and get answers from those who knew the building well.
