7 Questions with Stanley Branch

For this edition of 7 Questions with BB7, I had the pleasure of catching up with Stanley Branch, who has been with us since 2022. Stanley’s journey is a great example of how careers can grow at BB7. He first joined as an apprentice shortly after completing his A Levels and is now working as a Design Engineer in Fire Engineering.

Alongside his role, Stanley is also studying for a Bachelors Degree in Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire, supported by BB7. It was great to sit down with him and hear more about his experience, what he’s learnt along the way, and what’s next.

1. What led you to choose the apprenticeship route into fire engineering, and how has the experience been so far?

I chose the apprenticeship route into fire engineering because I wanted to gain hands-on, practical experience that I could apply to projects, while also working towards professional qualifications. I’ve always been interested in the built environment and engineering, and through researching the industry, I developed a real interest in fire engineering. So far, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve worked on a wide range of projects of different sizes and complexities, where the knowledge I’ve gained has been tested and advanced. I’m also attending university to build a broader understanding of fire engineering as a whole, not just project-based knowledge.

2. What does your role as a Design Engineer involve, and how does it support your development in fire engineering?

My role as a Design Engineer involves supporting day-to-day fire design deliverables such as Fire Strategy Report writing at different RIBA Stages, drawing reviews, and CFD modelling, whilst also being exposed to Fire Safety Assurance and Fire Risk Management. Acting as project engineer on these projects allows me to gain experience in completing deliverables, developing client-facing skills, and attending design team meetings. My role also includes attending frequent CPD sessions, both internal and external, as well as university.  

3. How do you balance studying at university with your role at BB7?

Balancing university and work at the same time can be a challenge. However, setting aside time and planning my week enables me to make sure I’ve allocated enough time for studying, assignments, and work responsibilities.

4. Is there a particular project or piece of work you’ve been involved in that you’re especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of a CFD project where we investigated the suitability of design guidance and the effectiveness of code-compliant natural ventilation in protecting occupants and the fire service during a fire scenario. This project was very rewarding, as it involved a lot of individual and group research to ensure we were satisfied with the results of the study.

5. What skills or knowledge are you most excited to continue building as you work towards becoming a fully qualified fire engineer?

I’m most excited to develop my technical knowledge in areas such as fire design, and more specifically CFD modelling. This has always been a key interest of mine since I began my career, and it’s something I’d like to continue throughout.

6. How has the support from the BB7 team helped shape your learning experience so far?

The support from BB7 throughout my journey has been excellent. There’s an incredible amount of encouragement to ask questions, no matter how trivial they may seem. BB7 has also encouraged me to take on new challenges and supported my growth by providing clear explanations, resources, and opportunities to get involved in.

7. What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in fire engineering or a similar discipline?

If I had to give any advice, it would be to go for it – an apprenticeship is a great way to start your career early while also gaining professional qualifications. The apprenticeship has allowed me to grow and develop individually, and it’s taught me invaluable skills that will be useful throughout the rest of my career.
