James Lane

James came to BB7 with an already established pedigree in delivering fire strategies for significant projects. He began his career in fire safety as a test engineer with Warrington Fire Research Centre (WFRC) as it was known in 1990. After graduating with a BEng (Hons) degree in Fire Safety Engineering in 1996, James moved into fire consultancy and quickly established a skill in providing clear and comprehensive advice to clients and design teams on complex subjects.

Developing his career, James has worked for leading fire engineering practices and multi-disciple companies to produce the fire strategy for iconic buildings such as the Sage music venue in Gateshead, a proposed extension to the Victoria and Albert museum tagged the Spiral and the detailed fire strategy to attain building regulations approval for 20 Fenchurch Street (Walkie Talkie) building.

A Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Fire Engineers, James is a Fellow member and has sat on the board of trustees at the IFE since 2019. He also lends his considerable knowledge and experience to developing fire safety codes of practice at BSI as a panel member responsible for publishing BS9991 and BS9999.

James is an advocate for the full involvement of a fire specialist in all aspects of delivering a fire safe building. Design of the layout and fabric of the building has equal importance with the implementation of the agreed design into the construction and establishing suitable fire safety management practices. Fire safety is a system which relies on all parts for success. If one element is not performing the whole thing cannot perform.
