Project overview

BB7 were appointed for Fire and Security engineering on the The South Wales Metro project which involved the development of an integrated public transport network and a £100m metro depot. BB7 provided RIBA stage 2 and 3 fire engineering support and security strategic design services for both the CVLICC Control Centre for the Core Valley Railway system, as well as the associated Depot facility at Taff’s Well on behalf of Keolis Amey.

Project Scope

The South Wales Metro (Metro De Cymru) is an integrated heavy rail, light rail, and bus-based public transport services and systems network in South East Wales, around the hub of Cardiff Central. The project includes a brand-new metro depot at Taff’s Well, new trains, the electrification of the Core Valley Lines, new stations, and many other exciting new developments.

The BB7 response

BB7 provided strategic fire safety advice on maintaining the CVLICC as a functional hub in an event fire occurs within the building. BB7 worked with Keolis Amey to provide adequate fire safety provision to both occupants and fire service on the depot with existing site constraints. Input was provided on the key physical features of the site, including perimeter security measures and external measures within the site boundary. Cost effective and efficient security solutions for perimeter detection and access
control were provided, and increased resilience of core assets within the infrastructure was achieved.

BB7 being novated to Stage 5 also provides third-party assurance, advisory, and validation to Alun Griffiths that the technical design meets or exceeds the fire strategy developed by BB7 at Stage 3. The BB7 team also undertook Vehicle Dynamic Assessments (VDA’s) to allow for specification of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation elements in the form of blockers, bollards and roadway barrier systems.
